In 2017, the Grutas del Palacio UNESCO Global Geopark (Uruguay), initiated the first successful edition of the Latin American Day of Geotourism.

Τhe Latin American Day of Geotourism is organized by the Geoparks Network in Latin America and the Caribbean in collaboration with the UNESCO Office in Mοntevideo, Regional Office for Science for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The eight UNESCO Global Geoparks in Latin America (in Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Nicaragua) Aspiring Geoparks and/or Geopark projects in the region are encouraged to organize activities and events to promote Geoturism . Activities carried out during the Latin American Geotourism Day, include workshops and talks with the communities, sports days, gastronomic and artistic events, geo-cinema, hiking through trails and routes, geological walks, open classes of ceramics and other crafts, board games, tours in national parks, among other initiatives aimed at promoting interaction between people and territories.

The Latin American Day of Geotourism includes events taking place simultaneously in all UNESCO Global Geoparks in Latin America and the Caribbean, Aspiring Geoparks and/or Geopark projects in the region. The activity will take place on Saturday, April 16, 2022.
