WORLD SOIL DAY. 5 December 2024

The Global Geoparks Network encourage all UNESCO Global Geoparks to celebrate on December 5th the World Soil Day, with the aim of highlighting the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and its contribution to human well-being of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Soil is a valuable natural resource, although its importance is often overlooked. It is a key component of rural life, agricultural development and ecological sustainability and it is the basis for food, feed, fiber production, while supporting many critical ecosystem functions. Soil is a non-renewable resource threatened by contamination, although its conservation is essential for food security and a sustainable future.

UNESCO Global Geoparks provide unique places for the protection and wise use of the soil and the Global Geoparks Network invite all Geoparks around the globe to participate in the celebration of the World Soil Day 2024 to raise awareness for the importance of Soil for the ecosystems and our life and relationship between soil and water.
