The Global Geoparks celebrate on December 5th the World Soil Day 2022, with the aim of highlighting the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and its contribution to human well-being of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems. The theme of this year's celebration is "Soils: Where food begins" aims, according to UN, to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, and encouraging social groups and especially farmers to improve soil health (https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-soil-day).

Soil is a valuable natural resource, although its importance is often overlooked. It is a key component of rural life, agricultural development and ecological sustainability and it is the basis for food, feed, fiber production, while supporting many critical ecosystem functions. Soil is a non-renewable resource threatened by contamination, although its conservation is essential for food security and a sustainable future. UNESCO Global Geoparks provide unique places for the protection and wise use of the soil. Many UNESCO Global Geoparks have special thematic exhibitions and education activities on the value of soil preservation and protection. Τhe Global Geoparks Network invites all Geoparks around the globe to participate in the celebration of the World Soil Day and organize field activities for its local people and visitor and raise awareness for the importance of Soil for the ecosystems and our life.
