UNESCO and the Global Geoparks Network are co-organizing the International Digital Course on Geoparks 2021 “UNESCO Global Geoparks and Sustainability”.

The Course is hosted and delivered by the University of the Aegean, the UNESCO Chair on Geoparks and Sustainable Development of insular and coastal areas  and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest at Lesvos Island UNESCO Global Geopark, Greece, one of the first Global Geoparks in the world.

The Course will take place from 7-20 June, 2021 through zoom platform.

Lectures will be held daily from 12.00-16.00 GMT.

For the participants from countries with significant time difference the organizing committee will provide the opportunity to follow the presentations, the same day through a recorded video.

The Digital Course on UNESCO Global Geoparks 2021 will focus on UNESCO Global Geoparks and their contribution to the Sustainable Development

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of challenges to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all that the world, through the United Nations,  has set for itself for the year 2030.

The 17 goals, which include zero hunger, reduced inequality, and climate action, can only be achieved if the world comes together and everyone takes action.

UNESCO Global Geoparks have been taking up the challenge and are starting to act.

With 17 goals and a total of 169 targets, it may be a tough choice where to start, though. And how can each individual UNESCO Global Geopark contribute to a more sustainable, safe, and equitable world?

In this International Intensive Course on UNESCO Global Geoparks, we will explore the SDGs and learn from other UNESCO Global Geoparks that are already taking action about how everyone can contribute to the global goals.

We will also discover that the SDGs are an opportunity both for the world and for UNESCO Global Geoparks that wish to have a real impact in their communities and on the society they are part of.

After the Course, participants will know where to start with the SDGs in their organizations, and they will know where to find the resources and inspiration to take action successfully.

If you are interested in participating please submit an application form accompanied by a short CV and an abstract (one page) of your country’s geoparks project which you will present during the Course.
